Tom Fisk
Our main contribution is through carrying out quality research seeking to propose equitable solutions and public policies aimed at a transition towards a green economy, based on climate justice principles. We focus on the use of global statistical models, at the frontier of knowledge, combining economic, environmental and naval engineering aspects, and that consider the specificities of the countries, products, routes and ships used. We understand that it is important to assess the heterogeneity of regional effects while also ensuring the decarbonization of the maritime sector.
Paula Carvalho Pereda is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of São Paulo (USP). She has been part of the Brazilian delegation to the International Maritime Organization since 2018. Paula has led several international projects on applied economics with a focus on climate and the environment. She has worked with institutions such as the Inter-American Development Bank, the World Resources Institute, Newton Fund, Lemann Institute, Black Jaguar Institute, among others. She participated in the 4th IMO GHG Study, contributing to the demand projection model. Her research is published in top international environmental economics journals. She has also received two research awards from USP in 2023: USP Mothers Researchers Award, and Best Young Researcher of Economics at USP. She holds a productivity grant from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) for the period 2022-2025, one of the most prestigious research grants in Brazil. In 2022, she was awarded the "Amigo da Marinha" medal by the Brazilian Navy in recognition of her contributions to the field. Paula holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of São Paulo (2012) and was a visiting researcher at Yale University between 2018 and 2019.
Andrea is a professor at the School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities of the University of São Paulo (EACH / USP) in economics and quantitative methods. Ph.D. in Economics from the University of São Paulo (2013) and visiting researcher at the University of Birmingham, UK (2011-2012). Her main areas of research are quantitative methods applied to climate change economics, natural resource and environmental economics, public policy evaluation, productivity and innovation. She has published several papers and book chapters in these areas. Since 2017 she is enrolled in a research project on evaluating the impacts of reducing GHG emissions in the maritime sector. In this context, she has co-authored the 4th IMO GHG Study and she has been participating of the IMO’s Intersectional Working group discussions on reduction of GHG emissions in collaboration with the Brazilian delegation and Brazilian Navy. Andrea is a member of the World Economic Forum Expert Network and has worked with researchers from renowned universities such as Harvard Business School, George Washington University, Illinois Urbana Champaign University and University of Munich, financed by Lemann Fund. Andrea has also participated in studies related to environmental economics in collaboration with World Resources Institute and Black Jaguar Foundation.
Jean-David Caprace is currently a Professor at the Ocean Engineering Department of the respected Alberto Luiz Coimbra Institute for Graduate Studies and Research in Engineering (COPPE) at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). He has played an important role in leading various international projects focused on Ocean and Marine engineering, both within Europe and Brazil. Jean-David's expertise lies primarily in ocean and marine engineering, where he has significantly contributed to the field through his extensive research efforts that have resulted in groundbreaking solutions used in shipbuilding, offshore construction, port logistics, and international marine transportation. His significant achievements include being awarded 2021 a highly esteemed research productivity grant from Brazil's National Council for Scientific and Technological Development, which exemplifies his exceptional standing within academia. In recognition of his contributions to the field, he was awarded the "Amigo da Marinha" medal by the Brazilian Navy in 2022. He obtained a Ph.D. in Ocean Engineering from the University of Liège in Belgium (2010). Additionally, he served as the technical director of the Brazilian Society of Naval Engineering (2018-2022), Head of UFRJ|COPPE's graduate program in Ocean Engineering (2019-2023), and Director of Academic Affairs at COPPE (2023-2027).
He is Associate Professor of the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). He graduated in civil engineering from UFRJ in 1986 and obtained his doctorate from COPPE/UFRJ in 2000. He was Head of the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering and Coordinator of the Undergraduate Course in Naval Architecture for almost 10 years. He was also technical director of the Brazilian Society of Naval Architecture (SOBENA) from 2009 to 2012. A specialist in maritime transport and shipbuilding management, he is part of the team at Labsen - the Naval Engineering Process Simulation Laboratory of UFRJ's Ocean Engineering Program, and participates in the inter-institutional research group Climarine Initiative focused on R&D activities in energy efficiency in the maritime industry.
Crístofer Hood Marques graduated in Mechanical Engineering and holds a master's degree in Computational Modeling, both from the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG), Brazil. He also holds a doctor's degree in Ocean Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ/COPPE), Brazil. He stayed in Belgium for four months attending a course in Ship Design and Structure at the University of Liege. He worked for nine months at the metallurgical company VILERI with the design of heat exchangers, steam generators, and pressure vessels in general. Crístofer started as a substitute professor at FURG in 2009 and is currently an adjunct professor, having already worked in undergraduate courses: Mechanical Engineering, Business Mechanical Engineering, and Naval Mechanical Engineering; and at the postgraduate level: Ocean Engineering (PPGEO/FURG) and Computational Modeling (PPGMC/FURG). Crístofer is currently a postdoc at the Center for Advanced Power Systems, at Florida State University (FSU), in the USA. He is experienced in Mechanical Engineering and Naval Engineering, with an emphasis on Marine Energy Systems, working mainly on the following topics: marine propulsion, power generation systems, thermal management, computational fluid dynamics, and optimization.
Thais Diniz Oliveira is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Global Development within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University. She has been involved in several projects on applied economics focusing on climate and environmental assessments. The most recent topics of her agenda include regional and sectoral carbon footprints, emissions mitigation scenarios and policies. She has expertise in carbon pricing mechanisms and international trade, with publications in high-level peer-reviewed international journals. Thais has worked as a consultant for institutions such as the World Bank Group and UNCTAD. She has also produced a report for a Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) on healthy and sustainable food system transition. Thais holds a PhD in Applied Economics from the Atlantic Technological University Sligo (2018), was a postdoctoral research fellow at Centre International de Recherche sur l'Environnement et le Développement (CIRED) between 2019 and 2020, and the University of São Paulo in the period 2021-2023.
Rayan is a Ph.D. in Applied Economics from the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV). Was as a visiting researcher during the doctoral period at the Center for Policy Studies (CoPS), Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia. Recipient of a scholarship from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). Possess experience in handling and processing micro-data in Brazilian databases (POF, PNAD), as well as constructing input-output matrices. Primarily researches in the areas of public policies and social programs. Fulfill roles as a coordinator, researcher, and data contributor for the Brazilian Economy General Equilibrium Analysis Project (PAEG). Designed the DAYANE model, a General Equilibrium Analytical Model for the Brazilian Economy using GEMPACK, featuring a disaggregated labor market. Developed the PAEG_Cerrado model, a General Equilibrium Analytical Model for the Brazilian Economy utilizing GAMS, which disaggregates the Cerrado region and enables analysis of CO2 emissions issues. Engaged in research of mathematical methods in economics, with a focus on computable general equilibrium models, showcasing expertise in economic data management and analysis. Actively involved in research projects at the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA - Cerrado), at the Northeast Development Superintendence (SUDENE) and Climate Change Policies for the Maritime Sector. (CLAMARINE INITIATIVE) as part of current responsibilities.
